Background
This is our first purchase from Burundi and we are so happy to work with Long Miles Coffee Project! Ben and Kristy Carlson are the founders of Long Miles, established in 2013 as a desire to improve the lives of coffee producers and roasters who found it challenging to purchase quality coffees from Burundi. Today, Long Miles has projects in Burundi, Kenya and Uganda. Their ways of improving the livelihoods of coffee producers are straightforward: they pay higher prices and annual premiums for coffee cherries, while providing year-round agricultural assistance to their partner-producers.
Gishubi is one of eleven hills that Long Miles works with. It has a slightly cooler microclimate than the other regions that work with Long Miles in Burundi, which means that coffee cherries at Gishubi mature and ripen slower. When we first cupped Gishubi, its sweetness stood out to us, along with a vibrant and ripe acidity that held up over time. This is a coffee with a ripe and bright fruity tone, with a lingering aromatic finish. It is a great introduction to the coffee profiles that Burundi has to offer.
