Ndiani Factory, which is essentially a wet mill and a coffee production point, belongs to the Rumukia Farmers’ Cooperative Society in Nyeri, Kenya. This is a classic coffee-producing region that is defined by its altitude, bright red and rich soils, and fantastic coffee production. We decided to purchase a less classic way of processing coffee in Kenya where majority of the coffees are washed. This lot was bought by Mercanta, and sourced by Kenya Cooperative Coffee Exporters Limited, which was founded in 2009 and aims to empower coffee producers in the marketing of their coffee to have increased income. This organisation provides producers with technical and advisory services to help them increase production and quality, and thus revenue and income, which can then be looped in to continually improve coffee production.

As a naturally processed coffee, this lot still displays the distinctive blackcurrant flavour that Kenyan coffees are well-known for, especially from this region. However, the fruit quality is more like stewed or cooked fruit, super ripe and sweet, as a result of the processing. We love this layered interplay between the terroir and processing traits here.
