Every Kenyan harvest season makes us especially excited. Because washed coffees from Kenya, to us, hold everything we enjoy most about specialty coffee: acidity, mouthfeel, structure, sweetness, and distinctiveness. This year, our purchase comes from the Kirinyaga region of Kenya where rich volcanic soil supports coffee cultivation. The Karumandi Factory was established in 1961, and is part of the Baragwi Cooperative Society, famed for their consistently high quality coffees in Kenya. The fermentation of coffees at Karumandi Factory is done with fresh water from the Kemweti River, which contributed to its distinctiveness.
A vibrant and juicy acidity and fruity aroma that reminds us of blackcurrants is characteristic of washed coffees from Kirinyaga. This lot is an exceptional example of a well-produced, high quality washed coffee from the region.
